“What I love most about my job is it’s diversity, one patient may be presenting with hip pain, the next with something totally different… and also love treating children especially as it feels they are not the only ones to benefit from the treatment it helps the parents too!”

Gitte Pedersen - Osteopath

I’ve been working as an Osteopath since I qualified in 1992, initially as an associate in others practices, and tutoring at my previous college. I took the opportunity to travel, working in New Zealand on two separate occasions, but settled back in Oxfordshire, where I now work from Summertown Clinic and my practice at home in Chipping Norton.

What I love most about my job is it’s diversity, one patient may be presenting with hip pain , another with some form or RSI, arthritic issues and also seeing children. It is especially gratifying to treat children as it feels they are not the only ones to benefit from the treatment it helps the parents too! What we get to do as osteopaths is get to know our patients, their situation so we can better understand what is happening with them, causing their problems.

My postgraduate training has mainly been in the cranial and visceral discipline, and pelvic girdle pain. I like to treat patients during pregnancy , to help their body cope with the adaptations needed to manage a growing baby, keeping things active and flexible with gentle treatment to help mum have a better birthing experience and deliver a calm baby.

During an initial consultation I will take your case history, do an examination , and assess what I feel is happening, and with your permission then carry out a treatment. At the end of this session it may be relevant to give you some exercises/ stretches  to help your recovery.

Practitioner Summary

  • Diploma in Osteopathy from the European School of Osteopath in 1992.
  • Teaching at the ESO as a clinic tutor, and technique tutor.
  • Teaching at Oxford Brookes University

I particularly enjoy treating babies, children, pregnant mothers and older patients. I use a range of techniques including cranial and structural Osteopathy and some visceral work.

I also like working in general practice and am happy treating patients of all ages and with a variety of conditions, except for sports injuries.

During an initial consultation I will take your case history, do an examination , and assess what I feel is happening, and with your permission then carry out a treatment. At the end of this session it may be relevant to give you some exercises/ stretches  to help your recovery.

Patients should wear comfortable clothing and may need to undress to underwear but can wear a gown if necessary.

1. Do I need to undress for my treatment?

– Ideally you will be asked to undress and there is a gown to wear, which allows me to see how your Spine/ body is moving during active tests. Sometimes it’s not necessary to disrobe, but it’s always better to wear something like leggings and a vest top, making it easier for us to feel how things are moving….jeans aren’t very helpful.

2. How long does a treatment last?

– Most practitioners allow between 60-45 mins for the initial consultation, and 30 minutes for a follow up. Time taken may be less or more, it simply depends on what is needed for effective treatment.

3. Do I need a GP referral to see an osteopath?

– Most patients self refer (unless they are coming via their insurance (such as BUPA) and then they do need a referral). Although a referral is usually not necessary, patients are encouraged to keep both their GP and osteopath fully informed, so that their medical records are current and complete and patient receives the best possible care from both healthcare practitioners.

4. What training do osteopaths have?

– Undergraduate students follow a four or five year degree course combining academic and clinical work. Osteopaths are required to update their training throughout their working lives, we complete a minimum of 30 hours every year.

5. Can anyone call themselves an osteopath?

– The title Osteopath is protected by law and only those included on the register are entitled to practise as osteopaths. Unregistered practice is a criminal offence. You can look your osteopath up on the register here: Search the register…
