Warm Up this Winter with Thai Yoga Massage

Do you struggle with the colder weather and shorter days? Do you find your muscles and joints feel tighter and ache more in the winter? Do you find yourself hunching your shoulders against the cold and getting neck or shoulder pain as a result? Then you might want to try Thai Yoga Massage!

For anyone who hasn’t already experienced Thai Yoga Massage this is quite different to what you might normally think of when you hear the word ‘massage’. For one thing a treatment is given on a futon on the floor, with the client wearing soft, comfortable clothing like leggings or gym trousers and a long sleeved top. We work holistically, normally starting with the feet and working up from the legs to the spine, to the neck and head, often including hands, abdomen, and maybe even some assisted Pranayama (breath work) in the process. The mixture of acupressure, joint and spine mobilisation, and gentle assisted stretching, is extremely beneficial in releasing tightness in the muscles and joints, and maintaining a healthy range of movement. It leaves you feeling more supple and relaxed.  Specific areas of pain or tension, specific issues such as digestive problems or a headache, can be addressed. Every treatment is tailored to suit the individual client.

Thai Yoga Massage works on the ten Sen lines (similar to the Meridians) that run throughout the body.  The therapist uses bodyweight rather than strength, working with a meditative pace and focussed attention. It has been described as being like a dance between giver and receiver, or like ‘having yoga done to you’, or sometimes even as ‘lazy man’s yoga’!

In fact, as the name suggests, this bodywork comes from a background of Yogic and Ayurvedic traditions, but it is also based in Buddhist traditions. We aim to treat the whole person, balancing the body’s energy systems, and finding a pace or ‘flow’ to the treatment that suits the individual.

All of this can have the effect of leaving you feeling warmer, more relaxed, helping to overcome those wintery aches and pains, and maybe even helping to lift any winter blues. One client told me that she felt warmer for several days after her treatment, others have reported that their body feels generally more ‘awake’ or ‘alive’.

So whether you’re feeling the physical effects of the colder weather, or finding that the shorter days leave you feeling a bit low or less energetic, give Thai Yoga Massage a try and see if it could bring a little warmth to your winter.
