Duncan Cameron Mitchell
“One of the many reasons that I love my job is the uniqueness of each individual patient and unravelling the mystery of why health has been compromised and how to restore it.”
Duncan Cameron Mitchell - Osteopath
My journey through Osteopathy as a career can be broken down into three phases.
Initially after graduating going into practice was intimidating. For the first year or two I was working in a part of Essex near to Dagenham treating men who had no truck with ‘holistic’ language. I doubted my skill set at first and for the first few years of my professional life doubted I would ever become wise.
The second phase was all about workload. Between 1995 and 2003 I averaged somewhere between fifty and sixty patients a week. The consequence of this was that a bit like Malcolm Gladwell’s theory of 10,000 hours practice, I became proficient. Simply put seeing all those patients honed my skills. I started to recognise what approach worked best for certain types of patients. I was now confident. However, what I did notice was that 80 percent of my patients fully recovered but another twenty only partially recovered or only improved for the short term.
It has been understanding this final mystery of the twenty percent which has filled my last ten to fifteen years. At first learning from physios and chiropractors to see what knowledge they could share then exploring more and more the link between the mind and the body. The Biopsychosocial approach and the success that patient education as part of a treatment approach can help helping individuals with persistent pain. Finally accepting that as a practitioner not all pain is treatable and that management strategies in these situations are just as valuable for those patients.
Practitioner Summary
– Qualified in 1991 from the British School of Osteopathy
– 30 years experience and approximately 40,000 patients treated.
I have studied with physios and chiropractors from the US, Canada and the Czech republic in patient rehab and learned injury screening at the FA headquarters at St.George’s Park.
